Choosing a Cloud Service Provider for Domains and Hosting

When publishing a web application, there are usually two separate purchases:

  1. A domain name, such as example.com, which is the public address users type into a browser.
  2. Compute hosting, which runs the web server, application, database, or container behind that address.

Large cloud providers can supply both pieces, although buying them from different providers is also common. A domain can be registered with one company and pointed to a VPS or managed hosting service somewhere else through DNS records.

Hosting models

VPS

A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a virtual machine with its own operating system, public IP address, and allocated CPU, memory, and storage. It gives the administrator substantial control:

  • Install Nginx, Apache, Docker, databases, and other software.
  • Configure firewalls, TLS certificates, backups, and monitoring.
  • Choose the operating system and upgrade schedule.

A VPS is flexible, but it also makes the owner responsible for operating-system updates and security.

Virtual hosting

Virtual hosting, often called shared hosting or VHost, places multiple websites on a managed server. The provider usually manages the operating system, web-server software, and routine maintenance. Customers upload website files or use a control panel.

It is convenient for a small static site, blog, or traditional PHP site, but offers less control than a VPS. For a containerized application or a custom server stack, a VPS, managed application platform, or Kubernetes service is normally a better fit.

The following providers operate broad cloud platforms. Product names, regions, prices, and availability change over time, so confirm current details in the provider’s console and pricing pages before committing.

Smaller and specialist providers

Smaller providers can be excellent for a simple VPS, predictable pricing, or a particular region. They may offer fewer managed enterprise services than hyperscale clouds, so evaluate support, backup options, and service-level commitments carefully.

Specialist providers are also useful for domain registration. Namecheap, Porkbun, Cloudflare Registrar, and regional registrars can manage a domain even when the application runs on another cloud.

AI APIs are a separate decision

Many cloud providers now expose AI APIs for chat, embeddings, image generation, speech, document analysis, and model hosting. This does not mean the website itself must run on the same provider.

For example, an application can use:

  • A domain registered at a domain registrar.
  • A VPS from Hetzner or Tencent Cloud.
  • DNS and CDN from Cloudflare.
  • An AI API from Azure, Google Cloud, AWS, Alibaba Cloud, or another model provider.

This multi-provider design can lower cost or improve regional performance, but it adds operational work: API credentials, billing, network egress costs, observability, and incident response are spread across several accounts.

A practical selection checklist

Before buying a domain or server, decide the following:

  1. Audience location: choose a nearby region for lower latency and check local compliance requirements.
  2. Application type: use shared hosting for a simple site; choose a VPS for full server control; consider a managed platform for less operational work.
  3. Traffic and budget: compare the total price, including disks, snapshots, IP addresses, DNS, CDN, backups, and outbound network traffic.
  4. Operations: make sure the provider supports automated backups, monitoring, SSH access, firewall rules, and a recovery process.
  5. Domain ownership: register the domain in an account controlled by the organization, enable multi-factor authentication, and keep renewal contacts current.
  6. AI requirements: compare model quality, supported regions, data-handling terms, rate limits, and token pricing rather than choosing an AI API solely because it is offered by the hosting provider.

For a personal blog or small service, a low-cost VPS plus a separate domain registrar is often enough. For a production system, start from the required region, security model, operational capacity, and expected traffic, then select the provider and hosting model that fit those constraints.
