A Brief History of Regular Expressions
Regular expressions (regex) have become one of the most ubiquitous tools in a programmer’s toolkit — yet few know where they came from. The story spans mathematics, Unix engineering, and decades of language development.
Origins: Who Invented Them?
The theory behind regular expressions was established in 1951 by Stephen Cole Kleene, a mathematician who described “regular events” and “regular languages” as part of formal language and automata theory. His notation was a mathematical tool, not a practical search mechanism — it had nothing to do with text editing at the time.
Engineering Milestones
The leap from theory to practice came in 1968, when Ken Thompson implemented Kleene’s notation as an executable pattern-matching engine, embedding it in the QED text editor. This was the first time regex was used as a tool for searching and manipulating text.
From there, regex spread through the Unix ecosystem:

Regex in Perl
Perl was built from the ground up with text processing in mind, and regular expressions were a core feature from Perl 1.0 in 1987. They were never an afterthought — they were a selling point.

Regex in Python

Regex in Vim
Vim’s regex story requires a distinction between vi and Vim:
- Regex-based search already existed in vi/ed/grep throughout the 1960s–70s.
- Vim inherited and extended vi’s pattern-matching capabilities — it didn’t introduce regex from scratch.
- Vim 1.14 was completed in 1991 and publicly distributed in 1992, with regex search built in from day one.
